Flatstock Series

Flatstock shows are a unique opportunity for fans, students, and collectors of posters to buy directly from internationally known artists. Contemporary limited edition poster art encompasses not only rock music, but movies and TV shows, comedy, social and cultural movements. Flatstock shows bring poster art to life, with demonstrations and education panels.

The roster of Flatstock exhibitors through the years reads like a who’s who of visual culture. These artists and designers have shaped the aesthetics of music, youth, and pop culture for generations and continue to do so today. While some balance ‘day jobs’ as designers, educators, manufacturers, and merchandisers, they all share the poster as their ultimate outlet for passion and creativity. Their talent is widely recognized – from Communication Arts design awards and People’s Choice honors to Gold at annual SGIA printing shows and Grammy awards for album design. Their work bridges the gap between commercial art and lasting cultural impact.

Flatstock History

The first show in San Francisco, organized by Frank Kozik in 2002 after some internet connectivity united a community of poster makers and lovers on the Gig Poster website was christened Flatstock. 100 shows have taken place worldwide, culminating with a group appearance (30 artists in a ‘Flatstock Village’) at DesignerCon in Las Vegas in 2024. At the same time an annual Flatstock in Mexico City at the Corona Capital Festival showcases some of the best artists from Canada, USA, Mexico, and South America.

Flatstock Today

The poster remains a viable icon in a world of digital blandness and encroaching AI. The rise of the ‘modern rock’ poster was born of a DIY need to advertise gigs for punk bands, and keep music driven art front and center as album art disappeared. Screenprinting became a favorite print method because it was cheap to get started, and the colors popped. The new artists picked up from the San Francisco art scene of the 60s, which owed a nod to the postermasters working in Lithography in the late 1890s into the first decades of the 1900s.
